Preliminary Exercise
Evaluation

To film a short conversation between two people, that
demonstrates 180 Degree line, Shot-Reverse Shot and Match on Action
180 Degree line: This is a line that cuts through the middle
of the scene from side to side. When filming scene you must film from one side
of the line and then not cross the line. This helps the film have good
continuity.
Shot-Reverse Shot: This technique includes shots that views
action from the opposite side as the previous
shot. This helps give the effect of one character looking at another.
This is used to make conversations.
Match on Action: This is where you link two shots together
in a way that the action in the first shot matches the action in the next shot.
This would be used to film someone opening a door. This helps the continuity of
the film.
To plan the conversation we firstly wrote a script and then
typed it up it on Celtex. This was complicated a first, but it was useful as it
made my script look professional with a professional format.
We then created a storyboard. This helped me plan what shots
I was going to use when filming the conversation.
I then did some location research. This was to find a
suitable location to film the conversation. I needed to make sure I had enough
space to film and the correct resources. (eg. Chairs)
Shot list
Long Shot: of person walking down a corridor and walking
through a door.
Close Up: of the door handle and the person going through
the door.
Medium Long Shot: from inside the room the person walks
through the door and sits down .
Medium Two Shot: This establishes the scene inside the room,
this is a side on view of both people in a conversation.
Medium Close Up: This was filmed over the shoulder of a
person to show the other person talking.
Medium Close Up: This was filmed over the shoulder of the
other person to show the other person talking.
Risk Assessment: I made sure that when filming there was
nothing that anyone could walk into. I also checked to make sure nothing within
the location could fall on someone. When filming I kept the camera on the
tripod at all time to make sure the camera wasn’t dropped.
How it was filmed
To film the first shot we set up the camera in the corridor
to establish a long shot of the person walking down the corridor.
Next we set up the camera for a close up on the door handle
to see the person walking through the door.
From inside the room we set up a medium long shot to watch
the person walk through the door then sit down.
Then we set the camera up for a medium two shot to show both
people in the conversation from a side on view. This established the
conversation.
Next the camera was set up to look over the shoulder of one
person to show the other person talking. The same thing was done over the other
person’s shoulder to show the other person talking.
When filming the conversation we did not incur any problems.
How Did We Edit
To edit the conversation we used Final Cut Express. In this
programme we first put all the shot in order.
We then cut the shots together in a way in which the transitions were
smooth and the film piece had good continuity. We then added titles to the film
so it could be identified. Then after that we added a fade in effect so the
film fades in after the title screen and a fade out was also added so the film
faded to black at the end.
These photos show that we have demonstrated the 180 degree line, shot reverse shot and match on action
